Overview

The Mechanical technician installs, tests, repairs, and maintains mechanical plant production machinery, support equipment, building, and other systems throughout the site to maintain optimum operating conditions and plant productivity. The Mechanical Technician also assists with related upgrades, improvements, and assigned projects as required.

Responsibilities

MECHANICAL TECHNICIAN POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Receives and performs job assignments through work orders, sketches, PM schedules, blueprints or verbal instructions. Follows applicable codes and regulations on work performed.
  • Responds to emergency requests for repairs/replacements, including fire system malfunctions which may be reported during off hours.
  • Troubleshoots malfunctioning systems, apparatus and components using test equipment and hand tools
  • Locate and remedy the breakdown or malfunction.
  • Repairs and maintains a variety of production machinery and equipment including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems and parts.
  • Installs, modifies and relocates machinery and equipment and in addition to electrical related work, may perform fabrication, welding, mechanical, plumbing, carpentry, or other maintenance tasks.
  • Repairs and modifies building and plant systems as required.
  • Reads and interprets manuals, schematics, blueprints, drawings, and other written installation and repair instructions.
  • Performs routine inspections and preventative maintenance of assigned plant equipment, packaging machinery, conveyors and systems including gauges, filters, fluid levels, system readings, air compressors, etc.
  • Requisitions and secures materials, tools, and supplies needed for assignments.
  • Uses a variety of measuring and testing equipment to troubleshoot, maintain, and repair machinery, equipment and systems.
  • Uses a wide range of shop, hand, and power tools common to the various trades applied.
  • Maintains specified records, logs and system readings.
  • Possesses knowledge of mechanical blueprint reading.
  • Follow prescribed environmental, safety and health rules.
  • Complies with sanitation guidelines and good manufacturing practices related to neatness, product cleanliness and personal hygiene.
  • Other tasks as assigned.
  • Manage third party contractor activities, Includes;
    • Job walks
    • Job Scheduling
    • Safety orientations
    • Permit writing(including JSA/JHA, LOTO, transfer, and permit close-out)
    • Conducting periodic site safety audits 

Qualifications

POSITION REQUIREMENTS: 

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Combination of technical training equivalent to that generally obtained in a two-year college or apprenticeship program.
  • Ability to work independently and in concert with Electrical Technician as well as production co-workers.
  • Minimum 4 years manufacturing work experience and/or 1 year Maintenance Technician, with experience & training to include:
  • Knowledge in Allen Bradley PLC (SLC-500 and/or PLC5), HMI, Control and Micrologix
  • Process Control & Instrumentation (temperature, flow, pressure, level, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge NFPA 70
  • Knowledge of machine Controls(480v, 230v, 120v and 24vdc)
  • Proficiency in variable frequency drive parameters
  • Ability to read and red-line P&ID’s, blueprints, schematics, and drawings
  • Can perform all required PM checklists (Lamination, Printing, Slitting, Building Infrastructure)
  • Skilled in troubleshooting of interrelated mechanical/electrical pump and conveyor systems.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance techniques, processes, and procedures for the repair, installation, and modification of a variety of company equipment, systems and facilities.
  • Skilled in the use of basic hand, shop and power tools and wide range of test and measuring equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, maintenance manuals, schematics and drawings.
  • Ability to conduct various tests to systems and must know and apply appropriate regulations and standards.
  • Forklift Certification or ability to obtain same.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions on the most appropriate approach to solving problems.
  • Effective creative thinking and trouble shooting skills.
  • Must willing accept overtime when required
  • Must be available for call-ins on off-shifts and weekends
  • Must be able to lift, stand on feet and walk for prolonged periods, climb ladders & stairs and work both inside and outside.(including in inclement weather)
  • Conduct all activities in a safe and effective manner
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance and document all activities on packaging equipment
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance and document all activities on compressed air systems
  • Inspect and repair steam lines, regulators, traps, and other steam related equipment
  • Basic preventative maintenance and troubleshooting of control valves
  • Understand, troubleshoot, and repair tank equipment including gauging systems, high level alarms, temperature controls, and other apparatus
  • Execute engineering & maintenance activities in the Plant as determined by the maintenance schedule and in accordance with agreed cost targets, HSSE, Security and Environmental targets
  • Perform preventative and predictive maintenance and document all activities on pumps, motors, packaging equipment, conveyor systems, and other mechanical equipment
  • Field maintenance tasks including equipment troubleshooting, installation/removal, repair and alignment
  • Perform complete overhauls on process pumps and ensure proper documentation of the repair including equipment condition history within SAP
  • Complete overhauls consists of the following tasks:
    • Troubleshooting
    • Disassembly
    • Parts procurement
    • In-house parts fabrication using machine tools
    • Assembly
    • Leak testing
    • QA/QC own work
    • Install, align, perform preventative maintenance, troubleshoot and repair pumps and seals
  • Perform minor machine tool work using lathes, mills, saws, etc.
  • Replace and install gear boxes( calculating motor and sprocket output speeds)
  • Diagnose and apply results using alignment tools for power-driven connections (i.e. reverse dial indicator, micrometer, and laser alignment tools)
  • Execute maintenance activities per instruction by the Maintenance Supervisor, and may include the keeping of records, monitoring of maintenance costs, and production performance
  • Carry out maintenance in accordance with the agreed schedules and consistent with HSSE rules and regulations including the PTW system and LOTO
  • Manage third party contractor activities.
