  • Overview

    Skilled worker with a thorough knowledge of procedures and processes associated with rail yard safety. Responsible for daily operation on rail car movement. Including but not limited to preparing rail cars, setting up spacers, and plugging in reefers. Receives instructions on which tracks assigned and the tasks to be performed. Constant communication flow between rail crew and locomotive driver, all following instructed safety procedures following OSHA standards.


    • Report to work according to my assigned work schedule following supervisor instructions.
    • Follow the companies' safety and quality instructions to avoid accidents and prevent injuries.
    • Maintain a clean and orderly work area by ensuring that floors are clean and organized.
    • Properly fill out daily documentation regarding rail schedule, shift activity, damages, and relocation forms.
    • Communicates in a clear and concise manner with locomotive driver to safely perform rail car operations.
    • Performs rail operation such as climbing rail cars, releasing hand brakes, coupling and uncoupling hair hoses from rail cars, and calculating right distance to move and stop rail cars following all safety procedures.


    • Experienced in rail operations/railcars.
    • Basic technical knowledge of railcars and locomotives.
    • General knowledge of communication and rail yard terminology.
    • Wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and follow all Safety Procedures outlined by OSHA.
    • Must be able to read, write and speak the English language.
    • Ability to perform all basic calculations (add, subtract, multiply, divide).
    • Solve practical problems, interpret instructions, and deal with a variety of variables.
    • Able to work in a fast paced moderate environment, and various temperatures to complete warehouse tasks. Ability to work in an environment that includes dust and other debris to receive, store, and ship materials, supplies, and/or other equipment.
    • Ability to perform physical activities that require lifting, walking, stooping, and handling materials.
    • Ability to lift and carry up to fifty-five pounds to move materials, supplies and/or equipment.
    • Ability to stand and perform work duties for an extended period of time.
    • Ability to handle up to 85 decibels of noise per eight hour shifts due to heavy machinery and rolling equipment, all according to OSHA permissible exposure limit.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
    • Ability to detect and interpret visual stimuli, day and night, at near and far distances, including hand signals, printed material text, and the speed and distance of moving objects).
    • Work other than normal scheduled hours, which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays according to the needs of the business.
