  • Overview

    This position provides direction and leadership in the area of sanitation, plant hygiene and pest control at a manufacturing facility.  This individual will drive the strategy, development, implementation, and sustainability of a cleaning and sanitation program to meet regulatory, global and corporate requirements related to food safety, sanitation, and pest control.   They will provide the technical expertise that will implement new and creative technologies, processes, and procedures that will reduce microbiological risk and product contamination.   This associate will provide support to the site by supervising and coordinating activities of contractors and associates engaged in duties concerned with food safety, cleaning and sanitation that enable the reliable delivery of products.  This position also supports plant profitability by leading sanitation efficiency, including development of more efficient cleaning methods, developing standard work, training, cleaning validation and identification of operational savings.  This role will lead both direct and indirect reports.


    Key Responsibilities:

    • Develops and maintains a Master Sanitation strategy for the site that brings in continuous improvement and new technology in cleaning methods to reduce microbiological risk and product contamination in an effective and efficient manner;
    • Integrates sanitation schedule and activities with overall Plant operations by partnering with cross-functional teams including Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Quality & Food Safety (QFS);
    • Works closely with QFS in solving critical and serious food safety issues;
    • Partners with commercial & manages supplier relationships with outside service providers;
    • Develops Business Unit cross functional relationships to provide best practice alternatives for similar technologies;
    • Manages the plant sanitation function including internal labor, contracted service providers, and direct reports;
    • Directs cleaning of equipment and work areas
    • Continuously reviews and updates cleaning methods, executing best practices
    • Confers with management and production personnel on sanitation problems and collaborates as needed to resolve those issues;
    • Ensures that all sanitation standard work is properly documented and implemented;
    • Trains all new sanitation personnel and associates in proper chemical usage and handling;
    • Establishes and maintains a Master Sanitation Schedule for the entire facility and grounds;
    • Manages the Integrated Pest Management program and service providers;
    • Performs cleanliness inspections of the plant, stored equipment and overall environment;
    • Promotes sanitation philosophies and ensure all levels of participation;
    • Leads continuous improvement as it relates to sanitation programs
    • Responsible for safety engagement, activities and performance of associates as it relates to food safety, sanitation and pest control activities;
    • Manages 1-4 direct reports and responsible for indirect managing of small teams of contractors. 
    • While focused initially on a priority plant (Hackettstown), this position will eventually provide coverage for other plants. 
    • This will require the ability to work remotely and travel at least 40% of the time to those locations.


    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent is required (Engineering, Applied Sciences, Food Science, or relevant Technical degree)
    • Minimum of 3 years managerial experience with a demonstrated ability and desire to work with people, both individually as well as in teams.
    • 5 years of experience in driving a robust and sustainable sanitation program in CPG manufacturing
    • Must have a working knowledge of Food and Drug Laws, OSHA requirements, etc.
    • Should have a broad understanding of major functions within the plant and the ability to work directly with individuals at all levels and functions.
    • Must be willing to complete specific college courses, integrated pest management courses and microbiological courses as required to carry out the functions of the role.
    • Knowledge of manufacturing procedures to include but not limited to receiving commodities, all aspects of processing, packaging and distribution operations
    • Excellent working knowledge of all production equipment, site layout, sanitation, pest control, quality systems and preventive maintenance and their application within food production facilities
    • Knowledge and general acumen of applicable allergen, chemical cleaning, cleaning validation and verification and sanitary design
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Familiarity with SDS, PPE, Chemical and Safety programs and requirements
    • Ability to travel up to 40% to other sites
    • Successful Completion of a drug and background screen


    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Advanced degree
    • 6+ years of experience in driving a robust and sustainable sanitation program in CPG
